Benzoin

Benzoin Styrax. 

Benzoin is an aromatic resin. The resin is produced by the styrax benzoin tree in response to an infection affecting the bark. The resin is tapped from the tree and an oil is then extracted. 

In perfumery, either benzoin Siam (from styrax tonkinensis trees) or benzoin Sumatra (from styrax benzoin) are used. 

Scent Profile: Has a clear vanillic fragrance (as it contains vanillin, just like vanilla beans) as well as nuances of cinnamon. Used in classical ambery, oriental scents for it's balsamic facets. 

Made Famous In: Prada, Candy EDP (2011). 

Did You Know..? 

Balsam is a term used to describe the gummy resin from various trees and shrubs. Benzoin in particular has sough after fixative properties, making it a popular base note in modern perfumery.
