Aldehydes
Aldehydes have truly revolutionised modern perfumery. Made famous in Chanel No. 5, it was actually Fougère Royale by Royal Fern (Paul Parquet for Houbigant) in 1882 that first featured these organic compounds.
The organic compounds themselves are present in various natural materials (such as natural citrus essences from orange rinds, rose oil, pine, citronella and cinnamon bark) and when used in perfumery, can amplify the scent, especially in the beginning, giving the fragrance a effervescent sparkle, like champagne or fizz.
